Boasting, Pride and Humility
Too often athletes become consumed with themselves and take pride in their accomplishments. Unfortunately they identify themselves as athletes and feel that theyare responsible for their abilities and achievements. As a Christian athlete it is important to not label yourself as an athlete. Avoid placing too much emphasis with that identity. You are a Christian first and foremost. The Holy Spirit is something you have and can be proud of.
Not all of us grow up and become collegiate and professional athletes. If too much emphasis on the fact that you are an athlete, you may be setting yourself up for disappointment when the time comes and are no longer able to participate in sports. Below you will find some verses that will help to remind you the importance of being humble.
“Don’t be selfish; don’t live to make a good impression on others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourself. Don’t think only about your own affairs, but be interested in others, too, and what they are doing. Your attitude should be the same that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not demand and cling to his rights as God. He made himself nothing… And in human form he obediently humbled himself…”
Philippians 2:3-8
“If you are wise and understand God’s ways, live a life of steady goodness so that only good deeds will pour fourth. And if you don’t brag about the good you do, then you will be truly wise! But if you are bitterly jealous and there is selfish ambition in your hearts, don’t brag about being wise. For jealousy and selfishness are… earthly, unspiritual, and motivated by the Devil. For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and every kind of evil.”
